Tajikistan means the "Land of the Tajiks". The word Tajik was used by
medieval Turks to refer to Iranian-speaking peoples. From the 11th
century, the term referred to East Iranian people, but by the 15th
century came to be applied to Persian speakers.
Tajikistan was frequently spelled as Tadjikistan or Tadzhikistan in
English, transliterated from the Russian Таджикистан (in Russian the
phoneme /d͡ʒ/ is spelled дж, that is, dzh or dj.

the ethnic politics of Central Asia have made the word Tajik a
controversial word, as it implies that Tajikistan is only a nation for
ethnic Tajiks and not ethnic Uzbeks, Russians, etc.

English. This former transliteration of Tadjikistan or Tadzhikistan is
from the Russian Таджикистан. (In Russian there is no single letter j

Tajikistan means the "Land of the Tajiks" in Persian. Some believe the
name Tajik is a geographic reference to the crown (Taj) of the Pamir
Knot, but this is a folk etymology.

Tajikistan is situated in south-east Central Asia, with an area of
143,100 km2. Tajikistan borders Uzbekistan in the west, Uzbekistan and
Kyrgyzstan in the north, China in the east and Afghanistan in the
south. The state boundary is 3,000km long.
The climate of Tajikistan comprises a variety of temperature ranges,
moisture conditions, precipitation character, and the intensity of
solar radiation. Depending on the elevation, average annual
temperatures may vary from + 17 to - 6°С. Maximum and minimum
temperatures may vary from +47 до - 63°С.
Tajikistan is the poorest country out of the former soviet states, the
poorest country in Central Asia and one of the world's poorest,
largely owing to a devastating civil war that broke out shortly after
independence in 1991.

Uzbekistan in 1924, but then became an “independent” Soviet socialist
republic in 1929. Tajikistan remained under Russian control until
1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed.
Most of Tajikistan's people are concentrated in its narrow, deep
intermontane valleys. About 80% of the population is composed of
Tajiks (also spelled Tadjiks or Tadzhiks), a Sunni Muslim people who
speak a language virtually indistinguishable from Persian (Farsi).
Tajikistan is a mountainous
country; about half of its territory lies at elevations above 10,000
ft (3,000 m), with the Pamirs dominating the east. The entire region
is prone to seismic activity.
