officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country located in
the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia.
8 million, Cambodia is the 65th most
populous country in the world. The official religion is Buddhism which
is practiced by around 92% of the Cambodian population. The country
minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams and 30 various hill
   tribes.
Cambodia became part of French Indochina in the 19th
century and proclaimed its independence as a kingdom in 1953.
Cambodia lies largely in the basin of the Mekong River; the
large lake Tonle Sap is in its western part. Much of the country is
tropical forest. It is one of the world's poorest countries.
Agriculture employs about three-fourths of the workforce.
reached by most Cambodian factions under UN auspices in 1991.
Elections were held in 1993, and Norodom Sihanouk was restored to the
monarchy. A civilian government slowly emerged under UN tutelage until
1997, when a coup by Hun Sen consolidated his position as prime
   minister.
Cambodia is located on mainland Southeast Asia between Thailand to the
west and north and Vietnam to the east and southeast. It shares a land
border with Laos in the northeast. Cambodia has a sea coast on the
   Gulf of Thailand.
Cambodia remains one of the most heavily forested countries in the
region, although deforestation continues at an alarming rate.
   PEOPLE AND CULTURE
Ninety percent of Cambodia's population is ethnically Cambodian.
cultural heritage, the Cambodian Government in 1995 established the
Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region
of Siem Reap (APSARA) to protect, maintain, conserve, and improve the
   value of the archaeological park.
Cambodia has had a pretty bad run of luck for the last half-millennium
or so. Ever since the fall of Angkor in 1431, the once mighty Khmer
Empire has been plundered by all its neighbours.
Cambodia promptly plunged back into the horrors of civil war in 1970
to suffer the Khmer Rouge's incredibly brutal reign of terror, and
only after UN-sponsored elections in 1993 did the country begin to
   totter back onto its feet.
It is important to remember that Cambodian history did not begin with
the Khmer Rouge. Pol Pot's incredibly harsh regime has garnered most
attention, but the Cambodians enjoy a long and often triumphant
   history.
There’s a magic about Cambodia that casts a spell on many who visit
this charming yet confounding kingdom. Ascend to the realm of the gods
at the mother of all temples, Angkor Wat, a spectacular fusion of
   symbolism, symmetry and spirituality.
Contemporary Cambodia is the successor state to the mighty Khmer
empire, which, during the Angkor period, ruled much of what is now
   Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
they are a bubble, a world away from the Cambodia of the countryside.

landscapes of dazzling rice paddies and swaying sugar palms.
