Brunei (Listeni /bruːˈnaɪ/), officially the State of Brunei Darussalam
or the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace (Malay: Negara Brunei
Darussalam, Jawi: بروني دارالسلام), is a sovereign state located on
the north coast of the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia.
Brunei has a
mixture of Southeast Asian ethnic groups: about two-thirds are Malay,
one-tenth Chinese, and the remainder indigenous peoples and Indians.
Languages: Malay (official), English (widely understood).
Brunei's western enclave consists of the valleys of the Belait,
Tutong, and Brunei rivers and is mainly hilly. The eastern enclave
contains the Pandaruan and Temburong river basins and the country's
highest point, Pagon Peak (6,070 ft ).
converted to Islam, and Brunei became an independent sultanate. When
Ferdinand Magellan's ships visited in 1521, the sultan of Brunei
controlled almost all of Borneo and its neighbouring islands.
Brunei has hereditary nobility, carrying the title Pengiran. The
Sultan can award to commoners the title Pehin, the equivalent of a
life peerage awarded in the United Kingdom.
Bruneians adhere to the practice of using complete full names with all
titles, including the title Haji (for men) or Hajah (for women) for
those who have made the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. Many Brunei Malay
women wear the tudong, a traditional head covering.
The requirements to attain Brunei citizenship include passing tests in
Malay culture, customs, and language as well as the national Malay
Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy. Stateless permanent residents of
Brunei are given International Certificates of Identity, which allow
them to travel overseas.
The Sultanate of Brunei (Full name: Negara Brunei Darussalam) is a
small but - thanks to natural gas and petroleum resources - very rich
country located in Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by Malaysia and
has two parts physically separated by Malaysia, almost being an
enclave.
Brunei is a pint-sized and fabulously wealthy oil-rich sultanate with
a population of 398,000 as of 2008.

from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of
the highest per capita GDPs in Asia.
Brunei has a small well-to-do economy that encompasses a mixture of
foreign and domestic entrepreneurship, government regulation, welfare
measures, and village tradition. Crude oil and natural gas production
account for just over half of GDP and more than 90% of exports.

Oil wealth allows the Brunei Government to provide the population with
one of Asia's finest health care systems. Malaria has been eradicated,
and cholera is virtually nonexistent.
The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th
centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo
and north into the Philippines.
A thriving oil trade has brought Brunei great wealth, and today the
country's population are like spoiled children: free health care,
tax-free income, low loan rates and free education are all handed to
the populous on a silver platter.
What is interesting about Brunei is that despite the relative wealth
afforded to Bruneians, many still live in very traditional ways. In
Bandar Seri Begawan, some 30,000 Bruneians still live in water
villages, built entirely on stilts over the Brunei river.

Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by internal
strife over royal succession, colonial expansion of European powers,
and piracy.
In 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate; independence was
achieved in 1984.
The same family has now ruled in Brunei for

Under Brunei's 1959 constitution, the Sultan is the head of state with
full executive authority, including emergency powers since 1962. The
Sultan is assisted and advised by five councils, which he appoints.
Brunei consists of a narrow coastal plain in the north, which gives
way to rugged hills in the south. The country's highest point is Pagon
Peak (6,070 feet ), in the southeast.
The climate of Brunei is governed by the equatorial monsoon winds. The
northeast monsoon typically blows from December to March, and the
southwest monsoon blows from May to September. April, October, and
November are transitional months.
About three-fifths of the population of Brunei is classified
officially as Malay. This category, however, includes not only ethnic
Malays but also a number of the indigenous peoples, namely the Dusun,
Belait, Kedayan, Murut, and Bisaya (Bisayah). Chinese make up about
one-fourth of the population.
